When I implemented ownCloud, it was a neat opensource platform with an active community, with the option of solid support at a fair price. Filesharing with "cloud" providers like Dropbox leaves you at their mercy for security (or lack thereof!) and the annoying clients require re-training on a regular basis. The support costs of the simple ownCloud web interface with drag-drop file uploading were one-time only. Performance was good enough, support was cheap enough, and it was fine for what we used it for.

Inconvénients

Over the course of a few years, the founders left due to "professional managers" messing things up. Support costs went up with no real indication why. I dropped ownCloud paid and switched to a solid commercial product called FileCloud. For "free" OSS I strongly recommend NextCloud, I've helped several friends set it up and they are ecstatic with the results.

Avantages

Overall the product is good, and a number of addons provide good expanded integration and functionality.

Inconvénients

The development focus is generally aimed at Enterprise only, the community needs don't seem to be nearly as important and so addressing feature requests is low on the totem.

We've switched from DropBox due to one feature it miss which is on-prem support. We use OwnCloud in an on-premise deployment method and now we're more comfortable that our files are more secured unlike before. Also OwnCloud supports server-side encryption as well

Inconvénients

It doesn't have any support for file locking. Lack of ability to detect duplicate changes on the same file by 2 different users.

It is your own server so it is the best to secure by your own way. Cook it as you prefer.

The Admin Panel lacks lots to enterprise features. The base idea of sharing files is not intuitive. It tooks a bit to get used of its limit.

Synchronization of local documents with the online web platform is automatic, very efficient and fast.
You can manage rights on your shared folders. You can be notified by mail when someone change a file on a shared folder. You can send a download link to an external user with a validity limit.
OwnCloud is a WebDAV server, so files can be opened thru a web url in Microsoft products and other tools.
You can have your own OwnCloud server on-premises.
SSO authentication and Custom branding make a great integration with internal tools.

Inconvénients

The solution is not optimized for very big files.

Easy handling, installation and configuration. After its implementation there is a cloud storage service, low cost that does not envy anything to similar programs with licensing costs

Being an Open Source, you can find information on the network, and in this way it can be violated by knowing how it is installed and configured.

Owncloud is absolutely wonderful. With pricing of storage going up everywhere else, OwnCloud's system is the one to beat. Open source, it works just like Dropbox/Onedrive and other systems we've already used. It's quick to set up, most web hosts can handle it with no issues. You can customize your login page, your admins, and using it is pretty intuitive. If you're looking for customized storage that you control, OwnCloud will do the job well.

Inconvénients

When first added, there were a few errors that I had to have my host sort, because I couldn't find any documentation on them for the OwnCloud. Since it's open source, it doesn't have a very robust support system.

Having my files on a server I control is a significant benefit. The user interface makes sharing files easy, with shares including an optional expiry date.

Installation and updates take some knowledge of Linux systems, and troubleshooting gets very technical quickly. This should be expected, since you are running a powerful server.

owncloud is a well known and stable tool for sharing files. But beside sharing files it´s also an calender-server a, contact-server and if needed a gallery. Owncloud offers a lot of plugins to fit a lot of needs.

Develoment slows down after the fork of nextcloud. The main focus is towards paying bussiness users.

This is a really great piece of software that has been well designed and implemented and does a great job in solving many problems and improving productivity.

We used Owncloud as our backup storage of our organization documents. I liked the ease of upload, share and version control.

Sometimes uploading a folder and subfolders wasn't easy. One had to zip it before uploading which was a little time consuming. But for single files there was no such problem.

What I liked most about the software is the ease of sharing and managing the files in the cloud, apart from the groups that can be created to share files in common.

Within the same group you can not create policies where not all of the same group can view the files, to achieve this you have to create a different group with only the people you want to share or share individually with each one.

one of the main features is the great ease of use and the possibility of access and sharing by all members involved, even external to the organization if necessary. For example, in my case it is a great tool to work on a project in which we collaborate with many different companies, all over Europe.

it is necessary to be careful in the definition of the modification visualization permissions because it happened to us by mistake that a user deleted part of the material, but it is positive the fact that you can recover everything

The software has the premise of being collaborative. However, the tool is very premature in this regard. Edits are made on the local computer by the text editor, table, or presentation that the user uses on their computer.

This makes standardization difficult.

The con is about the android application. It it very buggy so that the auto backup doesn't work.

This is a storage platform that stores your files like Dropbox and sync's them with your computer or computers . They have clients for Linux, Mac , Windows, Android and iOS. There is a free version but also there is a paid enterprise version with expanded features. There is also a growing market place of apps that you can install on your instance to expand functionality even further.

Can be a little complicated to setup initially. Not all features are available in the free/open source version.

Their top developer as well as others moved to the Nextcloud fork some time ago. Most of the development of Owncloud is now focussed on the paid version.

Further, I used it quite often in connection with external data storage. Owncloud is was much slower in handling that then Nextcloud.

I really like the ability of this platform to be able to make it keep all the things that I want and be able to share them with a link of vesialization, providing permission, blocking files, indicating the expiration date of the link etc. I find it impressive and very easy to use.

The not being able to do the implementation of the platform in a private environment since it has many limitations for that operating system. Taking into account that most people use that operating system.

The Website makes the design of the software look very modern, but in reality it is a bit boring.

The fork of ownCloud called Nextcloud has a much nicer design, faster development cycles and better comunity engagement.
Also on Nextcloud pretty much no features are paid. Everything except adcanced documentation and Premium Support is free.

I was relatively easy to set up on the server and provides a basic file structure so that institutional users can share files and keep them organized. It also has a chat feature.

Inconvénients

While it has most of the functionality that I could want in such an app. I have struggled to actually use it since I already have my other cloud storage providers. For the chat feature, I would rather reach for my phone to call, text or use the messaging function with the personal than use the company-mandated chat feature in ownCloud.

At the time I used this software, this was the only option. I have since moved to Nextcloud due to perception of ownCloud losing ground to Nextcloud.
