Easy to plot graphs and maps from data. Any one could learn using their documentation and have good user interface. Simple and elegant to look at. Very organized tool for researchers.

Inconvénients

Sometimes got fridge due to large data size. Too expensive for students as well. Difficult to absorb their documentation to use it.

Avantages

The import filter option allows me to drag and drop my raw data into OriginPro. Afterwards, they are plotted and analysed automatically, which is very convenient and saves me much time for a larger amount of data.

Inconvénients

OriginPro has a lot of functions and advantages, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed with all the possibilities. Luckily a lot of online tutorials and help files guide through the most essential features. When I am stuck, I use the Origin forum and usually get a helpful reply in a short time.

Avantages

Fitting function is excellent. Professional graphs are good.

Inconvénients

Difficult to make an automatic code to repeat routine procedure.

The comparative simplicity of preparing graphs, perfect their quality, variety of features and types of graphs.

Inconvénients

The price of this software is rather high. There are some difficulties with obtaining a desirable result, for example, with merging graphs. It would be great if there was a possibility to click on a data file containing two or three columns of figures and to see the respective graph in the Origin.

Avantages

The flexibility and power of OriginPro. I also really like the plug-ins that greatly facilitate tasks like plotting, fitting, exporting to Microsoft Office and the like.

Inconvénients

Control of outputting graphs is still somewhat clunky. You need to go through too many clicks in order to output graphs for publishing.

Avantages

It is very easy to make publication quality plots and setup templates for both analysis and plotting. The Pro version provides some very useful features, such as 2D FFTs and wavelet decomposition.

Inconvénients

The LabTalk syntax is different than the other programming languages that I know, e.g., Mathematica, C++, and Basic. The documentation generally provides good examples and explanations, but I sometimes have difficulty finding the relevant information. The ability to perform convolutions and deconvolutions is good, but the user interface could be improved by allowing the user to specify a function, without generating a data set (perhaps this capability exists, but it was difficult for me to figure it out).

Avantages

The ability to process data fast, and for me to incorporate superscripts and subscripts in my chemical formulae. Also, the ability to add a tiff file of my ChemDraw structures into my graphs.

It is an excellent product that can be used by middle and high school students.

Inconvénients

The inability to process NMR , FTIR , and MS data easily without going through a txt file.

Avantages

I use Origin primarily for data visualization. I do most of my analysis in python or Excel. That being said, I think Origin is great for creating good looking, customizable plots.

Inconvénients

I wish that there were integration with python. I know there is the weird built in thing in Origin, but I wish that origin would publish a python library that would allow for interfacing with Origin outside of the the actual desktop app.

Avantages

Ease of use, even for the most advanced features such as using a C code for defining fitting functions, etc.

Inconvénients

At times, the software crashes. It has happened too often likely, however, interruptions are not pleasant, and, in the past, data analysis work was lost. I am guessing this occurences have to do with increasing sophistication and number of features and processes the software is designed to perform.

Avantages

The best software for scientific graphing. It is updating and growing. Every year or a couple of years you have some new useful features.

Inconvénients

It's very badly optimized. Very slow to open dialog widows such as axis parameters. Always a lot of bugs.
Price for personal use is too high. Should be no more than subscription to office 365. If Department buy it, you are lucky, otherwise i would suggest other less efficient programs for same tasks.

Inconvénients

The yellow pop-ups are bothering me as I think this software is so intuitive that it won't take look to find out where to find the desired function to modify graphs, windows or save the project.

I have worked with Origin since its earliest versions and I particularly like the ease of use and flexibility of the program to produce publication quality figures. The data analysis aspects to the program are very helpful which I use for signal processing and digital filtering. The recent addition of a digitizer has helped with making improved versions of existing graphs for teaching purposes.

Inconvénients

When adjusting some aspects of a graph's axes the program will revert to some set levels of start and finish values for the axes even though you have just set them to what you want.

Avantages

When you have a new experiment everyday with different type of data, OriginPro is an excellent solution for data manipulating and plotting. You don't want to write a new code for a 10 mins verification experiment, with Origin the only thing you have to do is to press several buttons and magic happens! Beyond that, with this software you get the most advanced and diversified graph editor.

I think, it works slow with big datasets.

Last time I used this software was in 2010. I continuously used it during undergraduate and grad school and now after 9 years I had a chance to use it in an industrial research setting. I see a lot of improvements since then, new functionalities, better graphics, good customer support. It was the best scientific visualization software not it is even better with new functionalities such as interfaces to other programs, Matlab, Mathematica etc., new functions, new types of plots. I am still learning.

Inconvénients

There is not much. The software is now more functional and it takes a bit of time to get used to the interface with so many options. Maybe interface can be improved but it is a small detail.

This plotting software is extremely customizable and I’ve never had a problem plotting what I want— it’s only ever a matter of figuring out how to do it! Googling and tutorials are your best friend but overall ease of use for this product is very high.

The only trouble is sometimes with organizing the window with large projects to visualize everything— I wish there was a way to have the one session spread over two screens in an easier way.

Origin is a great platform for Drug Discovery data processing and analysis.

Data analysis, data presentation. Origin has a lot of models to analyze data including kinetics, spectroscopy and statistics. It is possible to find a proper graph style to present the data and switch between different graphs is easy as well. Most of all the program does it very fast (2D graphs).

Inconvénients

Automation features like LabTalk, OriginC etc. Some memory management issues like handling of big data tables and/or opening of many instances of the software might crash the program.

I like the user friendliness of the software. Lot of graphical options, each and every element of the graph can be customized. One place for all your statistical analysis! Helpful tutorial also available.

It combines mutliple applications, that were previously used.
Even more the AddOns that can be donwloaded for the Website increase the value. Many functions that are not present in the standard version like ranking, non-parametric testing with direct graphical output, can be added.

Sometimes the windows for certain setting and properties (graph layer options etc.) open slowly which makes a fast workflow not always possible

First of all, the software is very easy to use. You can visualize your data in several ways. The plotting is really easy. You can also derive mathematical equations and relations among your datasets in OriginPro. Overall, analysis of data in OriginPro is quite handy.

The software is not free to use. It would be great if there is a student version of the software. The software also does not work fast in the case of a large dataset.

Complexity. In order to have a very deep repertoire of capabilities, it is, by necessity, highly complex and, for beginners, not very intuitive. I think you have to have considerable experience to use it for simple graphs. I suggest having a simple, intuitive program for simple, quick graphing & use OriginPro for the more complex, intensive analysis and graphing.

I love that there are multiple scripting languages avaialable, but i primarily use Labtalk (origin's own language).
The user interface is intuitive, and range of data analysis techniques is easy to implement

I don't the pricing, it is somewhat expensive.
The labtalk language has gone through several revisions, and when searching for help, sometimes the user finds only references an outdated version.
a new manual with a large compendium of examples for labtalk would be very helpful

its not very user friendly but effective for statistical analysis. Curve fitting and co relation analysis is difficult.

Powerful graphics and analysis program. More options for graph type than any other program I have evaluated. Large range of customization options within each graph type (titles, axes, legends, drawing). Look of even uncustomized graphs superior to average graphing programs. Numerous analysis options: statistics, signal processing, spectroscopy, chromatography, etc. make it a valuable tool for all disciplines. Many options for data import/input and worksheet management. Online library of apps which provide specific solutions for many common applications.

Inconvénients

With the power comes some complexity. The learning curve is a bit longer than other graphics software, but online videos and free webinars are excellent resources.

Not enough instructions are provided for using Origin's various (new) features especially for new users.Many of Origin's new features are unknown to me, and there is no simple way to learn them quickly.

OringinPro contains all the necessary statistical features and user-friendly methods for organizing multiple plots. The folder/file/sheet organizing structure is also very neat.

When a OroginPro project file also contains an imported bitmap image, it takes a long time to save.

I like how easy we can make graphs and make changes in the graphs. Also, I love the data fitting features because it is easy to use and to add my own equations. The Start Menu in the 2021b version is also very nice as I can quickly access the files I have been recently working on.

Inconvénients

I don't know why, but sometimes when I copy/paste a graph it changes the dimensions of the image and distort or cut by half my graph. When this happens, unfortunately I have to start a new file as it never goes back to working again.

I like the graphing options available on the software. The software allows me to create graphs that could easily communicate data in the way I want the audience to receive the message.

The software could be more user friendly. It takes some active use time to get familiar with the multiple different options available to you. Some times your not even aware of the additional functions. Some of the colors are to flashy for business themed presentations.

As my title said, you must use origin if you want to make good looking graphs or figures for your scientific papers. the customer support you get in live chat is awesome. the other day, I was stuck making a ternary contour diagram and live chat agent helped me till the last step.

the error messages should be more clear. I think the software should let me know exactly what am I missing or what exactly my error is when trying to make a graph. the error messages I get do not help.

How you use all the efficiency features is not very intuitive. You need a separate training to really learn to use the software 100%. LabTalk seems a vital part of the software and a better training material on this would be helpful. FIle size gets large quickly with added data and graphs, which makes the overall operation slow.

I love the technical looking plots I can make with Origin. They are much easier to customize (once you learn to navigate the menus) than in other platforms, like google sheets or microsoft excel.

It is tedious using the scroll bar to navigate the display. Mouse scrolling is not an option as of now.

I have the control I need to produce production quality graphs. Once I got used to working with the fitting functionality, I was able to create my own functions which added even more flexibility for doing the work I need to do.

The learning curve is a steep. That said, it is not as steep as other vector graphics programs (e.g., Freehand or Illustrator). I am guessing because this software is focused on what you need to produce production quality graphs as opposed to providing arbitrary flexibility to create any type of image.

Ability to perform multiple analyses using the batch processing option and the option to use various downloadable applications for specific task. The peak analysis option is also brilliant.

Inconvénients

The layout of the software does take some getting used to. There is so much packed into one screen that it can become a bit overwhelming. It can even be tedious switching between windows. Exporting files and pictures can also be a bit of a bull sometimes. But once you get a feel for it the front panel does become a bit easier to operate.
