Terrible Implemention Experience

Terrible implementation experience: Expensify is not taking ownership of an incomplete implementation. Iam writing this poor review out of exasperation with their poor customer support.

Avantages

In evaluating this solution, we liked the demonstrated functionality, relatively low cost, and credit card offering.

Inconvénients

The implementation experience has been terrible. The approach is not well organized. Early on we had problems "whitelisting" the Expensify ACH codes which we quickly rectified on our end, but it took Expensify nearly 10 days to restore related services. Then for some reason the integration with Xero stopped working in late March and one month later is has not been resolved. The only human we can speak with is our implementation coordinator which is frustrating because this is clearly a technical issue. I have asked on multiple occasions to speak with someone who can solve this issue only to be told that there is no one else I can speak with. Unacceptable.

BUYER BEWARE- there are much much better platforms out there with better rates and actual...

Avantages

Compared to an equivalent service - nothing, they don't compare.

Inconvénients

Very sketchy billing process - if you make any changes, your new subscription date changes with the date of the change. No heads up - it just appears on your statement. Good luck getting a person to talk to, 5 or 6 unanswered emails - called our customer sales manager, she also neglects to respond. Their customer service is severely substandard. You get a live chat and that is it. Our company has jumped ship - I highly recommend you do your homework before utilizing this program, we have found another which is leaps and bounds better and a third of the price. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF YOUR AUTORENEW - if you choose to use expensify. I guarantee you you will end up changing to another platform if you didn't do your homework properly on their "lack" of service / customer service and must find out the hard way.

Can't compete with new kids on the block

It just doesn't compete with new expense reporting systems that have awesome new features, are free, and have great UX.

Avantages

Not much now that I found an alternative expense reporting system for my company. Expensify was great when there was little other competition. The price was more reasonable than others. The receipt matching was decent, and it was awesome to have it integrated with Quickbooks to reduce financial admin.

Inconvénients

It is very clunky and slow. It would take forever to pull reports, make changes, or create pdfs. It is also expensive in comparison to new kids on the block that are more feature rich with advanced technology that are free.

Expensify is decent for what it does but a product I'd ever recommend

It saves me time with my receipts and allows me to get reimbursed quickly, but this isn't a company I'd ever want to support. I wish my company would drop them.

Avantages

Expensify has some cool things about it. It's pretty quick and easy to submit receipts for expenses and the approval process is easy. It's simple to add receipts and get everything compiled into one report for reimbursement.

Inconvénients

I don't like that it's not always simple to add multiple receipts to one expense. Sometimes one is missing a date so I need to also include a card statement screenshot and adding the supporting documents doesn't appear within the report like I'd like them to. I also wish there was a better way to add comments to the expense itself rather than the chat-like thread within the report. I also have never had much luck with the auto-receipt reader. I just enter my info manually because it hasn't been super reliable.

Most importantly, I have to say that the email message Expensify's [SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN] sent out to ALL Expensify users prior to the 2020 election was absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional. He had no place to use his platform and account holder lists to blast every Expensify user with such a biased, partisan message. If it were up to me, I would have dumped Expensify that very moment across my entire company because I don't want to do business with an organization that shoves their politics into my face unsolicited, regardless of which side of the fence they're on. Very dissatisfied with this approach.

Ease of use for end users, but not much functionality, features, or reporting for admins

It allowed our company to switch from manual expense reporting to automated expense reporting. We are now switching to a better expense reporting tool.

Avantages

Anyone that has a basic understanding of technology can just load the app and use it to submit reports.

Inconvénients

While Expensify is super user friendly for end-users, the admin side of things is severally lacking. There are very few functions and configurations that can be made on the admin side. Also, the direct integration with QuickBooks Online is great and easy to use, but adding accounts in QuickBooks Online sometimes automatically adds accounts to certain expense policies in Expensify, but not all policies. It seems completely random which policies accounts are automatically added to and which ones aren't. Also, the reports you can pull from Expensify for admins is very limited, almost non-existent. I have reviewed lots of other expense reporting tools that provide a lot more for admins.

The only customer support I have been able to find is through their website chat. I've waited multiple days for a response to issues I've had.

Expensify also changed their pricing this year and they simply aren't competitive with other companies unless you lock into a contract of 1 year or more. Every other company I talked has month-to-month contracts with cheaper pricing than Expensify.

Expensify is the worst EPS I have used in 20 years of my career

My overall experience with Expensify is unfortunately a mostly negative one. I do not recommend this product at all.

Avantages

I honestly don’t have anything positive to say about this software. I have been an Executive Assistant for a long time and I have used several EPS. I have been able to intuit and jump right in to use every single one except for Expensify. It does not function like anything I’ve used previously and not in a positive way.

Inconvénients

Expensify is not easy to use. I have been an Executive Assistant for nearly 20 years and used a variety of EPS and this one is the worst by far. It is not intuitive, it is very confusing, it requires a lot of customizing on the individual user’s part to view what you need.

Lack of transparency in billing, unsupportive customer support, minimal support options.

Negative overall experience.

Avantages

It integrates with Quickbooks accounting.

Inconvénients

I would stay far away from Expensify.

The company has an annual subscription page under your profile which shows you a monthly cost of from $9/user/month. Key word there is the 'from'. If you are not using the Expensify card, they will bill you $36/user/month. Yes, the less services of theirs that you use, the more they will charge you for. They don't state this clearly anywhere and instead send you to different articles or newsletters with convoluted explanations and no clear way to determine how much your monthly cost will be.

Customer support via online chat gave me the runaround when I tried determining our monthly cost, making sure to send me links to lengthy articles. When the bill came out to more than I expected, I spent hours going back and forth through chat asking for a discount, and explaining that there was no clear way to see what we would have been charged for the month. Customer support was not budging at all, and only kept sending me more lengthy information on how the bill was calculated.

It should not be that hard to calculate monthly costs on an expense application.

When I tried to ask if I could escalate the issue, they said that was the highest form of customer support they offered - no phone support nothing - only a chat window where you talk with a no name 'concierge' person.

They do not care about their customers in the least.

Buyers beware.

Probably won't recommend Expensify

Avantages

Back when I first started to use expensify, I was thrilled I was able to keep track of all my company expenses and payments easily through the app. But the app on the phone wasn't as well built as some other programs.

Inconvénients

The thing I least liked about Expensify is that it's not as robust nor as easy to use of a program as other options out there. I ended up switching to Intuit self-employed app that fit my needs much better.

Difficult to use

Avantages

1. Able to track expenses in one app
2. Supports different types of expense

Inconvénients

Difficult to get to work across the team. We started using this app for all team expenses, but when team members would send the expenses to the individual that processed them, it was very inconsistent as to whether she received the expenses or not. Ended up wasting lots of time trying to figure out why it worked for some team members but didn't work for others. No longer use the software.

Always an issue with something daily.

Avantages

Easy to use interface. Inexpensive. Desktop and app sync quickly. Lots of potential with.

Inconvénients

Everyday there is a different glitch/patch/problem that arises with both the desktop and app versions. Not a complete and comprehensive program for all expense reporting needs. Will not sync with all credit card types. Customization not extensive. Worst of all is the customer service. Any inquiry (via a chat box) will not be replied to for minimum 4 days up to 2 weeks.

WE stopped using it last month

We went with a better company for not much more money. Make your own deal I will not advertise competitors. I switched from this product last month but still get emails.

Avantages

Cheap Price was reasonable quality was average with some glitches. You get what you pay for. We now have better.

Inconvénients

Missing lots of useful developments in modern day software for tracking billing.

Difficult product to navigate with little to no support

Inconvénients

Many cons with this product, mostly around poor support but the biggest issue I have is that Expensify incorrectly coded the date for a receipt which meant it was missed when the report for that month was run. I sub-contract to a firm who contracts me to other firms for projects. The project has finished and closed down several months ago and I have no way of getting my money back. Expensify support have dodged the issue and told me to go back to my administrator! I am a company of one, so the Administrator happens to me!

Defiant Customer Service and Inability to Recitify Problems

Avantages

The automatic import of credit and debit card usage; The quick and easy way of uploading manual receipts when on seldom occasions one pays with cash.

Inconvénients

Their inability to take responsibility when the platform's features breaks down. Suddenly the Bank of America connection was down, and in investigating this they just said they did not know when that would be up and running again. This was after an extensive e-mail exchange with customer service, that also appeared less then well informed about functions and features.

Regular app to register expenses

Avantages

Good ios app where you can register a new expense and take a photo of the receipt and that's it. Just click OK and the expense is forward to the right person

Inconvénients

The OCR is a joke. It simply does not work. It takes ages before giving you any result and when it does, it is unable to detect anything right.

All went well until we moved to Microsoft exchange when suddenly basic uploads started failing

Avantages

When it works it is great - life is easy, you upload your expenses etc. If you use gmail it works great!

Inconvénients

Customer Service is sooo bad if anything goes wrong!

Don't use it with Microsoft Exchange as suddenly all basic uploads stop working and Customer Service should not be given that name in this company as they simply have no idea how to provide a service. All I got was reasons why it was not their fault!

You weren't born to do expenses, you were born to wait for a tech support response.

When the software is working, it's fine. God forbid you should have a problem requiring tech support. Since they don't offer phone support, problems that any other company could solve in less than a hour can drag on for days and weeks. They offer a variety of excuses why they don't but as all other major companies do offer it, their excuses ring hollow. The bottom line is that it would cost them more money which they are unwilling to spend to do a better job.

Avantages

Nothing that a different software can't also do.

Tech support and their treatment of their customers.

So glad I don't have to use this ever again

Avantages

I literally like nothing about expensify, if I have to choose one thing, its the interface.

Inconvénients

Like I mentioned, not a fan at all. I found it slow, many times I'd be halfway through my report then it would lose my progress, the smart scan feature only works like 10% of the time, if that much. Theres a TON of potential, but It's not executed well.

My overall experience with expensify was not good

Avantages

Expensify is a simple tool for expense management. I guess if you have a small business it does the job, the platform has a clear view.

Inconvénients

I didnt like a lot of things. I gave expensify a try but it didn't work for me. Our company have multiple entities in the US and in EU and expensify does not support this, the integration with xero is a mess i don't understand how does it work...My overall experience is bad. Everytime I tried to make it better didnt work for me and the customer service is a machine that is not really helpful.

Product has flaws, no phone support when you need it, even if you're paying $100s a month.

Avantages

I went with expensify for the price and because I thought the UI was polished. It looks good but has flaws... really it was price.

Inconvénients

Not having support for a business product is a joke. Especially when the product has bugs and known issues. I connected my domain to my personal account, giving access to those accounts to the business. There is no way to undo this within the app. I was chatting with one of their support reps and he set him self to away after giving me a canned and incorrect response! Absolutely unacceptable.

So close yet major problens

Avantages

It’s cheap, and it connects easily to QBO and NetSuite. But there are far more cons to pros for sure.

Inconvénients

It’s amazing that this is one of the most widely used expense management apps given the lack of support. The only way to get in touch with someone is by email. Even their “chat” support takes a few hours for a response. This alone may be the death bail of the company. Add on top of that the fact that it takes 5 business days for my staff to receive their money if their expenses are overpriced and it’s a disaster.

Limited User Support and Bait and Switch Pricing

Very poor. They doubled our pricing the year after we signed up (that was not known or pre-negotiated) and implemented (i.e. became "sticky"). They only offer online chat support and it can take days for a response.

Avantages

It is a fairly user friendly interface although the reporting tools are almost non-existent.

Inconvénients

There is no user support and the lack of reporting tools.

Good features, not so good implementation

Avantages

They have some really good features. They compete well for the SMBs, especially for companies that have a few not so frequent users

Inconvénients

Horrible implementation. We could not setup users properly, and also the integration with Intacct did not go well and even now it is not working. Would not recommend this tool for that reason alone

Used to work really well - Now broken for a month and no update

Really liked this before they broke it. ... After I subscribed of course.... and there's been no update on the card upload feather that made it so useful.

Android app constantly crashes now.

As it no longer does what it says it does I want my money back.

Product doesn;t do what the brochure says.
