Avantages

Nextcloud really becomes a grown-up alternative to Dropbox and a lot of Google Services. From private, single-user use to our deployment in an association with >50 users, the functionality covers most of the usual functionality like file sharing, sharing calendars and contacts and especially collaborating on writing documents with different Office-Plugins. The builtin Talk app might be a well-integrated alternative to Slack and, up to 3-4 users, also for Zoom. The fact that Nextcloud is open-source makes it a very budget-friendly choice (we rum it for <10€/month), as long as you have someone setting it up and administrating it, which does not take a lot of time, since kyrofa from nextcloud-snap does a great job in assuring automatic updates and upgrades and in QA. Also, the diverse App-Ecosystem is very great. I would say that, combined with a separate mail server (the built-in Mail App is not that great anyway), you will be able to replace most of the standard software in your small business.

Inconvénients

Nextcloud is often kind of unstable and slow. Follow the issues in nextcloud-snap and you will notice that development velocity seems to have priority over a thorough testing. That's not too bad since previous versions of Nextcloud are supported for a while, but just because they push a X.0.1 version, that doesn't mean that the upgrade will run smooth and the new major version runs stable. This is somewhat disappointing, maybe including all official app developers and kyrofa better in the release and QA process would make a difference. Also, the Talk video feature is mostly unusable for >5 people since it's a n:n connection. The high-performance-backend was open sourced recently and might solve the problem.

Avantages

I chose the VPS version of Nextcloud through a hosting partner and found that I have access to almost every service I need except bookkeeping. The hosted service costs me less than $10 a month and has allowed me to replace my subscriptions to GSuite and MS Office 365, saving me hundreds of dollars per year.

I love that an online office suite, a to-do function, calendar and e-mail all come as part of the Nextcloud Hub. Not to mention Nextcloud Talk, a great Zoom replacement. It is unbelievably convenient to work through a single interface for almost all of my needs - and all with enhanced security. Don't need to worry anymore about Google or Microsoft having access to my business and client files.

Inconvénients

I think this would be very difficult for someone like me (not a techie) to set up on his own. I thought about trying to run my own server in my office, but way too hard for me. So glad they have partners who help get you set up.

I'm a big privacy advocate, so it is important to me to keep control of my own files, contacts, and calendar, away from the prying eyes of Google and their ilk. The ability to quickly create a password protected folder, and share it with any client or customer, with full read-write capability, is a feature I've come to depend on, on a daily basis.

Inconvénients

I miss the ability to link my Google Drive and Dropbox storage but, honestly, I didn't use it that much anyway (privacy issues). Less of a big deal anyway, since I've now been able to upgrade my home internet service, and I can run a second version of Nextcloud on a Raspberry Pi at home, and Federate the connection to my main VPS. That means I can connect as much storage as I need. In the past I've had trouble with some of the updates, but that hasn't been an issue for more than a year. I guess I really have no complaints.

It's free! And since it's PHP, it's simple and quick and set up. Once done, it's effortless to use.

Inconvénients

It's written in PHP and can quite easily become a security nightmare but as long as you do the necessary precautions and server hardening yourself, it should be fine.

I like that I have control over my data and can adjust things a bit for my needs.

Not all the things work right. I have serious problems with the client. I get many error messages about sync, favorites don't work, and it is not very intuitive for the average non-techie.

Avantages

The biggest use case for Nextcloud is the file server itself. Admins can create users for the employees or setup registration with plugins and define how much storage and access each user has, how they communicate with others on the network with the Talk app plugin and integrate all of Nextcloud's features together with projects, which are similar to workspaces with a dedicated chat with voice and video calling, a project file space with realtime document editing (similat do Google Docs) and calendar integration all in one place.
All of these features are free and can customized for your own personal use case and it is very high quality.

Inconvénients

Setup can be quite difficult for someone with no experience on setting up Virtual Private Servers (VPS's) and with custom domain management, as it requires the Admins to create their own server and configure it with a GUI (in respect to configuring users and projects) and within the terminal for the VPS and domain provider (for a custom domain and SSL encryption, which is required for audio and video calling).

Microsoft Teams, while beeing a great option for a company to manage its users it is not recommended for small businesses due to its high price.

Free, open source, versatile.
After years of paying for data sharing and collaboration tools, Nextcloud provides these (and more) features while allowing our company to "own" the files. The data never leaves our private network, which these days is more important than ever.
For less than the cost of a one month subscription to our old plan, our company purchased all the hardware needed to stand-up a Nextcloud Server that we control. Sure, there are some small monthly costs associated with maintaining the server, archiving backups, and performing updates, but it's small in comparison to the security and reliability of keeping our data on site.

Inconvénients

Although there's considerable documentation, we experienced a few quirks during installation and deployment. Some are likely a result of our specific system configuration, but overall these were small and with a little internet searching, were quickly resolved

Avantages

It gives me more flexibility than other cloud storage options in terms of defining different users and user access to different content. Also, the federated storage model is fantastic - I can use much more cost-effective, S3 compliant storage solutions than standard web server storage pricing.

Inconvénients

A few of the user interface design choices are non-standard, such that new users don't always intuit how to use it; but there are only a few such issues.

That it's open source, focussed on security and privacy and VERY actively developed (in terms of bugs reported being fixed).

There ARE rough edges and I tend to hit them all. I eagerly await the PC client that allows to sync some directories on demand only.

Perhaps most importantly, through the built in app store, it serves as a platform for many other key business applications which we need, such as collaborative document editing, calendar and contact sync and share, internal knowledge base (wiki), and more.

It could be easier to get set up. The video conferencing features so far didn't work reliably on our installation.

Avantages

Nextcloud is a fantastic software that gives so many features for free to users to host their own data. The interface is very simple and attractive, and the mobile app and client-side software make it a great replacement for Google Drive

Inconvénients

Inherent with the versatility of the software, Nextcloud is limited to who can use it. It's very complicated to set up your own server for a non-tech user, and I feel this will be a barrier preventing it from growing.

Avantages

Nextcloud offers, in my estimation, about 90% of what Google or other services offer. Cloud storage, document editing, note keeping, password and bookmark backups, collaboration via chat or video, and a ton more via the rich plugin market. The best thing is that it can be hosted on prem, so no worries about how your data is being used. It is definitely a best in class piece of software

I haven't found any functionality that is missing, however it was somewhat difficult/cumbersome to setup syncing to mobile devices for notes, calendars, contacts, etc... The mobile app for Android isn't the best and often 3rd party solutions were needed.

I think it would be good to have a workflow in Nextcloud. for example, to create document validation processes in a collaborative way. And many other cases.

I would like to see the possibility of integrating it with our current CRM/ERP system , which is ERPNEXT.

If you want to host Nextcloud yourself you need your own hardware and some sysadmin skills. Or you just spend some time googleing the error messages. There is a lot of support for Nextcloud on the internet.

Avantages

Nextcloud comes with a great flexibility: already with a tiny budget you can get started and meet many of your organization's needs. There are no hidden costs. New features can be added by extensions ("apps") almost on-the-go. Scaling to bigger set-ups is not too difficult. The developers and community are extremely friendly and helpful.

Inconvénients

When we started two years ago, features were often not well documented and the upgrade process sometimes caused problems. But the situation has improved dramatically since then.
The approach to end-to-end encryption and its key management is sometimes confusing.

Avantages

Nextcloud has the best customer support I have ever seen. Every ticket gets solved quickly and with a lot of additional information from the developer. They are super precise, no questions gets lost. Essentially you are talking directly to the developer of the code. It is really the best support experience I had so long.

I also want to mention the Talk feature for video conferencing. It works quite good and with no privacy concerns. It is the one feature every employee needs, now during corona crisis.

Inconvénients

For regular users, that have never used a software to share files, the process of sharing can be complicated because of the many posibilities. Nextcloud could make thist process a bit easier.

Due to licensing considerations and the feeling, that Nextcloud will better fit our business goals.

Self-host solution - Since some files are sensitive, an on-premises was the only option our company was comfortable with.
Free/Open Source and continuous updates - We moved from Samba and Dropbox to Nextcloud without spending much (since it's open source), making the it easier for management to be convinced. Also there's continuous updates with new features and security fixes, and community resources as well (forums and apps).
Desktop & Mobile clients - Made it really convenient to access and sync files across devices and users, even remotely.

Inconvénients

- We had some issues while updating nc a few times before, and breaking the installation. Managed to fix it though, but our team is still not really confident with updates.
- Granular access controls. We have groups and group folders (owned by the main admin, shared to groups), and we use tags for restricting folders to certain groups or users. These restrictions can only be done by an admin, making it difficult for other users to restrict files to certain group of users (within the group/department folders). There's obviously room for improvement for access controls.

I was looking for a solution in my company for media storage, assign share links to my client's and employees, to be able to have control over their accounts, make announcements, edit folder permissions, commenting on shared files/links, and all of that is possible for me in Nextcloud!

I am blowned away the many feature si am able to use on my everyday basis in my company.

Something i really like is the drop file feature, i can make a folder and share that link for upload only, without viewing content etc. It is a huge help to drop suggestions etc.

I use Nextcloud with Mountain Duck on my companies computer, this way everyone can access their Nextcloud server like if it was a external hardrive.

Inconvénients

I would love to have more control over the styles on every elements, even thou it is possible to create my own theme, it would need lot's of coding.

Some buttons are not in the best position, i have to rely on custom css to change some buttons.

Some of the things I like most are the ease of installing and configuring, the ease of managing and sharing files, the wide range of apps, the ability to integrate with other systems, the ability to change the code to suit us and the rapid pace of development.

Inconvénients

I lack the support of virtual files in the sync client. To my knowledge, there is no info on what the bottleneck in the system is. It would have been good if there was a tool that could give an indication of choices in the system that are slow. Now I have tested myself to see which software or hardware has been too slow.

Just one issue. If your server needs an update (Self Hosted) it would be great to have the desktop software notify you rather than login with your admin account on the self-hosted system and look in there.

Easy File sharing for me and People outside the Company. Create a Folder, make a Link and send this Link via WA, oder Mail to my Clients and they can start Uploading all Files i need. No Matter how big they are. And evderything is Organized right from the Project Start.

Some minor Plugins are out of date or not longer developed. Has some Problems with the Online Radio Plugin.

Featureset and contious improvement.

Avantages

I can self host my own cloud in a secure environment and retain the flexibility of storage limits, user accounts, plugins and access methods. Client software exists for all major platforms - Linux, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. Configuration on the server side is quite straight forward and by having access to the command line tool on the server I could fix problems that arose. Documentation and user information is very good.

Inconvénients

Some earlier version upgrades had the potential to cause problems. Intervention on the command line was needed to fix things. Recent improvements have made upgrades pretty much seamless.
With a large number of plugins installed the need to frequently update the plugins becomes greater. This is done using an admin account in the web interface and is usually a one click operation.
Synchronisation can get confused with multiple clients and manual resolution is usually required to resolve conflicts in versions of files.

Avantages

I love being able to set up calendars independent of my email provider, but most importantly, Nextcloud makes it extremely easy to set up your own virtual drive. It's easy to install via docker on any device.

Inconvénients

The user interface is fairly slow. I don't use it often, so it's not a nuisance for me.

I like the open source nature of Nextcloud as well as the community support.

Avantages

Mostly it's extensibility. I find the ability to extend and personalize Nextcloud for your purposes the most valuable thing about it. I use it as a central hub to work with many other features within the organization.

Inconvénients

The cost of the paid versions of collabora office and nextcloud talk. I wish there was a tier for non-business users who what to simply set up a private service for their friends. The current price model puts these features out of reach for very small organizations or even for personal use.

I also wish password reset emails, or other email from the server could be encrypted via pgp keys. There's a plug in to allow this I think but it's held up by a pending merge request.

Avantages

Nextcloud gives you a feature rich platform for data storage, organisation and sharing but also many integrations like an Elasticsearch or LDAP connector and many more.
These integrations work flawlessly and the built-in apps like the E-Mail Client, an hosted Calender and even a Password Manager are now replacing many commercial apps we used before.

Inconvénients

The installation of Nextcloud is at some points a little tricky and nothing for completely unexperienced users, but with basic knowledge in Linux and the LAMP Stack this should be no big deal.
Some Apps like the "Passwords" app are missing some major Features like sharing a Folder of Passwords, but hopefully this will change soon.

Avantages

There are a lot of plugins/addons available to install. Kanbanboards, ToDo Lists, etc.
The Webinterface looked stylish and was good to navigate once you had a little time to get to know it.

Inconvénients

The included file synching for windows was lacking options and the ui was almost none existant.
All though there were a lot of addons, the base functionallity wasnt that big, so for us it took a lot of convincing to install new features. Evene when we had them they sometimes lacked features you would find in almost all standalone versions (For example the settings on the Kanban boards where extremely limited when compared to Standalone solutions)
As far as I know our Sysadmins had a fair share of problems with AD synching.

I manage about 10 NextCloud instances for different companies since Nextcloud was going his own way, away from OnwnCloud. Administrating NextCloud servers is just fun, with the integrated command line (occ) you can manage almost everything in an easy way. There are good manuals around if you run into any problems. The integrated system check (WEB-UI) also helps a lot to find miss configurations. As a user i like the nice designed web interface, and the possibilities you have (depending on the apps your admin has installed)

Inconvénients

Configuring CODE was quite hard, i had a while to understand how the communication between the CODE and the Nextcloud instances where working. WEB-Dav is on some client's unstable, but this may has to do with the clients company network, more investigation from my side is pending on this.
Some features i hope are comming somewhen:
- Multiple logical disks, and NextCloud manages where to store data (increase storage size).
- Clustering NextCloud, where NextCloud takes care of syncing storages.

I like the ability for NC to seamlessly sync files between systems, allowing easy access to my files anywhere.

Inconvénients

There are a few small features which would be really nice to have, such as automatic selective stub sync to workstations as OneDrive does, allowing you to have a dataset which appears local but only the used files are synced.

The interface of seafile wasn't what I was looking for, and owncloud seemed to be going a different project direction than I needed.

Avantages

Nextcloud is easy to install, whether on a web space or your own server. Only a minimal basic knowledge is required to install a web application in PHP. An automatic script does the rest.

Inconvénients

There could be more functions on the mobile app that are also available in the web version.

Avantages

Free and open source software, runs on standard LAMP on Ubuntu LTS with no dependencies outside the Ubuntu repos. Allows LDAP and local users to coexist easily. Running multiple nextcloud instances behind a load balancer "just works" - all long-term state is stored in the data directory or in mysql.

Inconvénients

The automatic installer and other tooling likes to write the config.php itself, and rewrite it when upgrading, making it a little annoying to manage with CM tools like SaltStack. But that's easy to work around.

Avantages

The amount of collaboration that is possible with NextCloud, ease of set up on private server (with Docker), perfect integration with different platforms and compatibility with tools.

Inconvénients

The Collabora Is not there yet as reliable Google Docs alternative, but hey, it's getting there fast!

It the internet goes down. It auto recovers. Even if you don't think it is working. It is always there. Sharing the folder out and it works everytime.

Gallery is my least favorite. It needs to load faster. The thumbnails are there. I don't understand how it takes a minute to load. I wish there was an easier way to multi host instead of started a new vm for each business. I would like to see where I can tell the software the new business and it takes right off. You have full control. It loads all the config from a different directory. Also i wish scaling was easier. I am finding scaling is not that easy with out subscription.

Ease of setup and extensibility. There are so many pluggins available to make NextCloud to what you need it to do, and it's easy to setup. I was also able to get all my information out of Google and into NextCloud without a hitch.

Inconvénients

During the install, I was never sure I was setting everything up just perfectly, and I felt I was on my own. Ended up following along with a video that made it very easy though

I was so tired of paying someone like Dropbox to store my files that I wanted to share, this was simple and intuitive to setup and provides so much flexibility

There have a few issues that come up sometimes but are similar to issues we had faced with Dropbox. Unlike Dropbox though, addition of plugins and the transparency with which nextcloud works made making changes to nextcloud to suit our needs very easy.

It is easy to install and the combination with nginx offer a really trustable, scalable and high performance platform. For whatever issue or customization need you can find the suitable solution on line. Definetly a suggested choice.

This software is rock solid. It works as expected sharing files, but that is not the only usage. It has been extended by a thousand apps and can be customized to a great extent. We can store everyting internally in our company, so it is only limited by our resources.

In our company we love it. It supports every platform we use (windows, mac, linux, ios, android).

it can be a bit difficult to prepare a HA setup.

Avantages

There are a variety of ways to install Nextcloud (components, snaps, docker, pre-made vm's...), so installation is simple. Once installed, it is LOADED with great features, and very user-friendly! The community Support Forum is very active and responsive.
We have even implemented Nextcloud as both on- and off-premises storage & collaboration solution to businesses as well as individuals.
I have nothing but good things to say about Nextcloud!

I wish I had discovered it sooner!
The first manual install to a LAMP stack was a bit of a learning curve. But, the community Support Forum was very understanding, forgiving, and helped out a GREAT deal.

Avantages

The best thing about this software is that file synchronization works flawlessly. My documents and other work are available to me on all of my computers and from the Web anywhere in the world. I can share files or whole folders with friends and clients, and the apps let me edit online, organize my tasks, read my email on the go, and much, much more.

Inconvénients

The documentation for manual installation is a little sparse, although it's only really necessary to refer to one other project to complete installation. Once everything's up and running, it's stable and easy to upgrade.

Avantages

We have been using Nextcloud from version 9 or so. It does what i says plus a lot more with little to no interaction from the administer (me). We host our own instance so we have it set up the way we want, and, "We know where our data is".

Inconvénients

It is a bit tricky to be hosted in a shared host environment not having a great deal of access ie. sudo. We seem to manage though.

Ultimately, it came down to costs and versatility. Nextcloud is completely free and had many great plugin options. Seafile is has a free community version, but lacks features which are important to me. Synology was another great candidate, but the lack of cost-efficient and powerful hardware made me look elsewhere.

Inconvénients

The GUI is very outdated. Needs an overhaul. The app is not so easy to use. It's complicated to save shared files on your cloud and computer. I can't understand the syncing of the cloud on my computer.

It's FOSS and it's cool! Easy to use, supports multiple accounts, quotas, and leverages your web browser.

Inconvénients

It's hard to find something not to like about Nextcloud. Maybe the fact that if you like to tinker you can damage the NAS database. But that's half the fun, too!

It is very easy to install, and use. Very straight forward. The UI is always improving and there is client software for all platforms. It works fine on my Windows, Mac and Android phones.

Inconvénients

The software is slow, very slow. I host it on a 32 cores, 128 Gb of Ram server, and 12 HDDs, with only 3 users. On my local network, browsing pictures take forever

Al administrar una implementación de NextCloud con un número mediadio de usuarios seria de gran ayuda que la creación de respaldo de información se puediera hacer por usuario, ademas algo que se pordria mejorar es la integracion con LDAP , añadiendo un modulo para la creación de suarios desde la misma NextCloud

Inconvénients

Not much! I wish more of the apps/plugins were usable in the mobile app. Sometimes I run across occasional sync conflicts with the desktop apps, which can be resolved, but it could be a smoother and more intuitive process to fix.

Avantages

NextCloud is compatible with a variety of storage backends from local storage to NAS or object storage. It's a completely open source solution that can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud. The versatility of NextCloud means that it can be tailored to meet virtually any compliance requirement governing data protection, cybersecurity, and backups. The core developers based in Germany, have a privacy-oriented ethos that reflects the strong attitudes towards data protection in Europe.

Inconvénients

The groupware apps such as Mail, Calendar, and Contacts that ship with NextCloud are basic in functionality. Fortunately, there are over 200+ apps to choose from in the NextCloud app store, allowing integration with more feature rich alternatives such as Afterlogic or Rainloop Webmail. The relative immaturity of the end-to-end encryption module built into NextCloud makes it preferable to use lower level alternatives such as LUKS for at-rest encryption, as opposed to application level encryption.

Avantages

It's been rock solid and upgrades have been mostly unproblematic (at first I was updating too early, with some plugins lagging behind, but then I switched to a different release chanel).

The wide variety of access methods (webdav, access over website, the desktop and phone sync clients, API) have all lent themselves to different solutions.

As the files are stored as normal files it makes backing up easy (e.g. with rsync)

The recently added Google-doc-like multi-simultaneous-editors functionality for text documents (MarkDown) is brilliant.

Inconvénients

Despite Microsoft inventing WebDav, their implementation is buggy with Windows 10 users having to re-log in every session.

The mobile (Android) sync client could be improved.
