It's like Dropbox that you control. Except it's also like Google Apps that you control. Or MS365. Or... And entirely brandable, for use with clients.

Essentially the app approach and open ethos (source/development/community) allows both a great core technology and infinite extendability.

The notifications system still needs some work, although it gets better with each release.

It's really easy to use the software and it has more or less every feature you need in the office (calendar, contacts, storage, notes, file sharing, etc.).

Some major updates just has reset settings. But normally they work good.

I am photographer and i love to use Nextcloud to share my pictures. It's safe for my clients, it's also powerful enough to allow hundred people looking at my pictures at the same time on a self hosted server. I like the apps, the file management between my PCs, collabora editing ...

Inconvénients

The only thing I would regret is that the gallery app which is absolutely perfect for my use have been abandoned for a new app which don't fit as the older one.

Avantages

All the features of Dropbox on your own server. You can run your own cloud at home with this software. No longer do you need to trust your files to computers that are under someone else's control. You can have privacy and convenience too. They have clients that work really well for Linux, Mac, Windows, Android and iOS so you can sync files all over the place and on all of your devices. They have a very active development community and a growing marketplace of add-on apps that you can install in your installation to expand functionality.

Inconvénients

Initial setup can be a little complex at first. Support is based mostly on forums and google searches, but there is a paid subscription service for Enterprise support.

Avantages

A trustworthy, robust framework to host your own data.
Pretty nice sync client that allows to selectively sync instead of an all-or-nothing approach.

Inconvénients

Inconsistencies with handling of last-modified dates.
Weird behavior when uploading folders via browser (directory hierarchy not preserved).
Desktop client UX not great...

Avantages

I was able to ditch monthly fees for iTunes Match and iCloud monthly storage fees by switching to Nextcloud. Privacy concerns lead me to abandon Microsoft/Apple/Amazon/Google/Dropbox cloud drives in favor of Nextcloud who can do it all.

Inconvénients

It takes some initial effort if you want to build your own webserver on an old PC, installing linux, etc. but its doable for non-linux people.

Avantages

Good UI, good synchronization, can work and be implemented with various platforms - like Hetzner storage for example.

Inconvénients

Well, the login procedure is a bit annoying. There should be a mobile - 2FA implementation, with each session being approved from a mobile device.

It seemed to be a bit more up-to-date then and better maintained. I generally prefer forks – there is often a good cause that leads to forking software.

Avantages

File synchronisation between server and client. Integrated Calendars, Contacts, and Wordprocessing: these are the fundamentals which provide all the basics for any-sized organisation. A perfect base on which to build.

Inconvénients

Current lack of comprehensive backup and restore capability at user-level. All implementations essentially require a high level of technical support in the background to keep the show on the road.

2. Enabled us to access and backup our data on current projects and their resources across different computers/phones and across national boundaries
3. Removed the need to carry data on laptops

The software is very great to deploy and maintain; Every user likes using the software. The build-in addons are a huge win. From my perspecitve one of the best choices you can do as a system adminsitrator if you want to deploy a software like nextcloud.

Inconvénients

Sometimes, there are really strange speed problems nextcloud, on which the logfiles don't include a lot of information about possible reasons.

Avantages

It is stable ven when you do not update to every single new version.
The syncing with the local client keeps data safe.

Inconvénients

Sometimes updates do not work as planned, one can correct the problem but it takes much time to manually restore the functionality.

This is not a Nextcloud problem but changing from owncloud to nextcloud is a bit tricky.

- Current Linux client (Linux Mint 19.3) ist not stable!!!

- no admin backend to manage the rest of the infrastructure (OS, redis, Apache, MariaDB, etc)

We keep our contacts and calendars, as well as our photos from the mobile devices of all family members under our control. We have files online available everywhere and can share them if desired. Not only business use, Nextcloud is still one of the best Cloud-options for privacy aware home users.

Inconvénients

Setup is still not so easy, well maintained standard Debian packages would be desired.

Avantages

Great document management software for project teams with great selection of plug-in apps. In addition to file management, I use a number of the plug-in apps. The "Deck" app handles my basic needs for agile-style Kanban project management without a monthly subscription, and Calendar provides a shared team calendar.

Inconvénients

Would be really convent to have apps for time-based project management (i.e. Gantt charts) with integrated timesheets to capture time spent on task.

I used ownCloud at my previous employment so when we needed a file sharing solution I immediately thought of it. However, Nextcloud appeared to be more actively developed so I chose to use it rather than ownCloud. I've since recommended Nextcloud to several other judicial districts around the state.

Avantages

If you are already hosting a server, the installation process is just few clicks and you have a Nextcloud instance Up and running.
The instance can be updated by administrator from settings page remotely. So keeping the instance up-to-date is easy. Have never faced an issue with updates.
The best part is that it is seamless. There's an app called Nextcloud Talk, that we are currently using for our internal communication. Since we are hosting it in our server, the privacy concerns are mitigated.

Inconvénients

Currently, I am unable to rename the file-sharing links.

Nextcloud is virtually hassle-free. It provides all the basics that a cloud should offer such as secure file sharing, calendar, contacts, access to email and a lot more. The one-click install feature for apps means that it is incredibly easy to add functionality as required. With the Outlook plugin, sharing files with contacts is both secure and easy.

Inconvénients

While there is a native file sync client for Android, the sync client doesn't sync contacts or calendar but requires a third-party app. Fortunately, this works well and is easily afforded.

I especially like the continuous improvement cycle that delivers new features, products and optimizations that is delivered with an automatic update feature.

It's a great software with nealy no costs, except the computer/NAS/server you are running it (that can be a raspberry pi f.e.). You then have all your data at home or at your company and not in the big cloud somewhere on the earth.

Inconvénients

You need to know how to set up the cloud and also need to administrate it. If you can do that, especially incl. the backups, then it could be yours. We always had downtimes because of errors, so for the company use it was not good enough.

So there are no traps after adopting the product, and if you need enterprise support and other premium services, you can get them .

It has 2 ways to do theming that can't co-exist and offer different functionality. So there is always some little thing you can't achieve.

I love the idea of self hosted cloud service. The fact that now every file has to be uploaded to 3rd parties is by itself a selling feature. There are quite a few apps and addons.

Most apps and features are halfway there. I know they will improve over time and I’m happy to support the development of some, but still not ready for the masses. Seems like the team prefers to spread features thinly rather then go all in on features.

The focus on main-functionality is awesome. Large customsers use nextcloud. Scaleability is great. Multichannel (Web, client, webdav, android, ios). There are many good apps.

Inconvénients

Legacy code, there is a lot of nearly unrewritable code in the core. Apps have certain dependencies and cause side-effects. Enabling social app kills the functionality of the cloud completely when a prerequisite app isn't activated before.
